Empire period ormolu bronze mantel clock, 'La Renommée', Faisant à Paris, early 19th century
Record status
Individual type · partial
Period
early 19th century
This French Empire period mantel clock, known as 'La Renommée', is crafted from fire-gilded ormolu bronze. The clock is highly decorative, featuring architectural elements such as columns with palmette moldings and capitals, and is enriched with classic motifs including laurel wreaths, rosettes, and female heads, known as espagnolettes.
The dial, marked 'Faisant à Paris', is positioned prominently, supported by the architectural frame. A distinctive feature is the frieze above the dial, which depicts an allegory of fame and renown, represented by two female figures or nymphs holding a chalumeau, a palm branch, and a laurel branch. The design is further complemented by openwork drapery details. The clock operates on a movement with silk rope suspension, a common feature for the period.
It stands 47 cm tall, with a width of 25 cm and a depth of 15 cm. Included with the clock is its original winding key. Faisant was a known clockmaker active in Paris during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, notably operating on Rue Saint-Denis around 1806.
