Tile depicting a poppy flower and ear of wheat, S. A. Manufactures Céramiques d'Hemixem, Gilliot & Cie, Hemiksen is held by Badisches Landesmuseum Karlsruhe. Museum description: In 1897, Georges Gilliot founded the tile company S.A. Manufactures Céramiques d'Hemixem, Gilliot Frères near Antwerp. The company produced its first tiles in 1898 and offered a variety of "dust-pressed wall tiles and stove tiles". From 1901 to 1904, production was expanded and the company's size increased significantly. While around the turn of the century fifty employees worked for the company, by 1910 there were already nine hundred. An excerpt from the 1913 catalogue shows that the company produced 250,000 tiles daily. It was thus among the largest tile producers in Europe. Most designers working for Hemixem remained anonymous. An exception is the designer H. Bonnerot, who signed his artistic tile pictures. The focus of production was on floral Art Nouveau, but geometric forms also appeared. In 1920 the firm receives The museum record gives maker recorded: S. A. Manufactures Céramiques d'Hemixem, Gilliot & Cie, Hemiksen. These details come from the holding museum's own record; how far this object represents a wider collectible type has not yet been independently verified.
