Period

c. 1827

This French Restoration period mantel clock, dating to approximately 1827, is a sophisticated example of Neoclassical and Empire-style horological art. Constructed from finely chased and gilt bronze (ormolu) set upon a white marble base, the piece is centered by a circular white enamel dial featuring Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic markings for the minutes.

The architectural housing is supported by two figural uprights depicted as putti or classical youths. The upper section is distinguished by an antique-style covered urn finial, intricately decorated with laurel garlands and flanked by ram's heads, further accented with pinecone finials. The base is embellished with gilt bronze mounts and supported by turned feet. The movement, which includes the pendulum, bears the stamp of Honoré Pons, an influential French clockmaker of the 19th century, marked 'Médaille d'Or 1827' in recognition of his achievements in the field.

Additionally, the bronze components feature the inscription 'Lux 85.' The clock embodies the refined craftsmanship typical of Honoré Pons, who was a pivotal figure in the development of the French clockmaking industry during the early-to-mid 19th century.
