Period
1914-1916
Colourised image of the 'Tombs of the Khalifs.' These mosque-tombs are situated north of Cairo and mostly date to the 15th century. However, rather than being the tombs of the Egyptian Khalifs, they are are actually the tombs of the Circassian Mameluke Sultans.
Younger brother Albert enlisted first. He is commemorated at the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial. Their mother died only a few years later in 1926, aged 73. Their niece was Mrs M.J. Hitchens, the donor. Colourised image of what looks like three mosques surrounded by high brick walls out in the desert. Back of the postcard features blank spaces for message, address and postage stamp. This postcard was originally kept loose, inside the back cover of the album.
