This silver athletic prize medal, measuring 50mm in diameter, was awarded for cricket in 1897. The obverse features the combined heraldic shields of the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, surrounded by the inscription 'Athletics, R.M.A.

Woolwich and R.M.C. Sandhurst' and the respective military mottos 'Quo Fas et Gloria Ducunt' and 'Vires Acquirit Eundo'. The reverse is engraved with the commemorative details: 'Cricket H. H. C. Baird. (Captain.) 1897', set within an encircling laurel wreath tied with a bow. The medal is presented in its original fitted case of issue from the maker, Tyler, London. This piece serves as a physical record of the athletic achievements of Henry Hume Chisholm Baird, who was later commissioned into the East Kent Regiment and received the Distinguished Service Order for his service during the Boer War.

The medal reflects the prestige of early sporting excellence within the British military educational institutions at the end of the 19th century.
