Period

early 17th century

Obv. only, bust of Michael Wolgemut facing left, clean-shaven and wearing a turban. This is lead medal representing the bust of Michael Wolgemut (active 1470- d. 1519) and Albrecht Dürer's (1471-1528) monogram.

The source for this medal is one of the two paintings by Dürer of his teacher Michael Wolgemut. Mende believes the medal to date from the mid to late sixteenth century, and the date 1508 on the obverse to have been added so that it would be a pendant to the so-called Lucretia medal (inv. 4574-1857), also purporting to date from 1508. Duerer was a German painter, draughtsman, printmaker and writer. Now considered by many scholars the greatest of all German artists, he not only executed paintings and drawings of the highest quality but also made a major contribution to the development of printmaking, especially engraving, and to the study of anthropometry.
