Record status
Individual type · partial
Period
early 20th century
Three month rail pass for the Music Hall Artistes' Railway Association, dated from April 1st 1939 and belonging to Mr J. W. Terry. In order to reach their engagements at theatres all over the British Isles, most music hall artistes ended up spending much of their time travelling up and down the country. The Music Hall Artistes' Railway Association was an organisation which got its members reduced fares on the trains. Mr J. W. Terry needed to take this membership card and a special voucher with him to get the one third discount allowed under the scheme. The card cost twenty shillings for the year in 1933, and the discount only worked in First or Third Class carriages. If you spent a lot of time on the road in your career, the savings must have been quite large.
Green and white rail pass. Text is printed in black ink on both the front and back. The expiry date is printed in red ink. The name of the holder is written in pen and ink on the front of the card. A black and white photographic portrait head shot of the holder is glued onto the top left corner on the front of the card.
