The curved shape of the finial on this form of spoon has led modern collectors to refer to it as a ‘dog-nose’ or ‘wavy-ended’ shape. The three distinct sections of the finial which characterised the earlier ‘trefid end’ spoon have merged, and 'dog nose' spoons can be considered a transitional form between the ‘trefid end’ and the Hanoverian pattern of the 1710s onwards. The marked central ridge on the stem also recalls the narrower ridge that runs down the centre of many Hanoverian pattern spoons.

silver, dog-nose pattern with rat-tail.
