Period
early 20th century
This collection features an early 20th-century Tuck's Gramophone Record Postcards Series A packet, produced by the noted firm Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd. in England.
Marketed with the slogan "They Play, Sing and Talk," this novelty series was designed as a patented process to combine phonograph recording technology with traditional postcard imagery. The lot consists of a primary illustrated outer paper envelope and three unused brown paper interior envelopes. The outer envelope serves as a catalog, listing vocal tracks such as "Auld Lang Syne," "Ye Banks and Braes," "Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond," and "Annie Laurie."
Physically, the items show expected period wear, including edge fraying, small tears near the flap, corner rounding, and instances of foxing or staining. The inner envelopes remain in sound structural condition with minor handling marks. The outer envelope measures 6.25 inches by 4 inches, while the three interior envelopes measure 5.75 inches by 3.75 inches, presenting a unique historical look at early sound-reproduction ephemera.
