Badge of the Guild of Saint George in Breda
Record status
Individual type · partial
Period
c. 1500
Wearable insignia, partially gilded, with a chain at the top and bottom. In an oval medallion with raised border, the figure of Saint George with the dragon is positioned "en ronde bosse" against a polished plain background.
On the rim are two shields, with the coats of arms of the city of Breda and of the Lords of Nassau-Breda with the quarters of Nassau and Vianden, applied on a branch-shaped volute and partially over a crown at its base. The fields were presumably enamelled, which can be deduced from the rough metal surface. The Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, holds this object as BK-NM-11221; its record gives material recorded as silver (metal); technique casting, gild; measurements height 7.5 cm x width 8.7 cm x thickness 2 cm x weight 119 g.
Description translated from the museum's Dutch catalogue text; details are those of this museum object, and how far it represents a wider type has not been independently verified.
