Period

c. 1600

Bookbinding of black leather mounted with silver, on the front in the center a silver cartouche with an uncharged coat of arms. On the back the same cartouche, engraved with a man and a woman holding hands. Costume of circa 1600. The four corners of each board decorated with an angel's head in a cartouche. The two clasps are attached to the boards, likewise by engraved plaques in the shape of cartouches. One of the plaques is damaged and broken through. The spine has broken in two as a result of inserting a small 1777 bible that proved too thick. This has been removed. The Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, holds this object as BK-NM-9697; its record gives material recorded as leather, silver (metal); measurements height 9 cm x width 5.8 cm. Description translated from the museum's Dutch catalogue text; details are those of this museum object, and how far it represents a wider type has not been independently verified.
