Honorary Medal of the Municipality of The Hague Awarded to Willem Drees

The gold honorary medal was granted to Drees by decision of the Mayor and Aldermen of The Hague on 5 July 1966 on the occasion of his eightieth birthday, and presented to him on 19 August 1966. The award of the medal included appointment as an honorary citizen of the municipality. Only two other persons were also honorary citizens of The Hague at that time. The design dates from 1952; for each honorary medal awarded, a separate reverse die was always produced with the name of the beneficiary. In the Money and Banking Museum in Utrecht (former Dutch Coin Museum) there is a bronze strike of the honorary medal awarded to Drees (inv. no. 1.34.00702.1); it was customary for the State Mint to make a bronze strike of every newly produced die - notice from M. van der Beek (Money and Banking Museum) by e-mail dated 3-6-2004.
