This 22ct gold prize medal was issued by The Worshipful Company of Shipwrights for the International Exhibition of Ships’ Models held in London in 1882. The medal, which measures 2 inches (5cm) in diameter and weighs 62 grams, features a detailed design typical of high-quality commemorative awards.
The obverse depicts the armorial bearings of the Shipwrights’ Company, accompanied by the inscription "Worshipful Company of Shipwrights" and the motto "Within the Ark Safe for Ever". The reverse side is centered with an open laurel wreath enclosing an engraved dedication: "London 1882, Awarded to Yarrow & Co. for Stern Wheel Steamer". The phrase "Competitive Exhibition" is inscribed outside the wreath. The medal is fully hallmarked for 22ct gold.
Included with the original gold medal is an electrolyte facsimile copy, which was retained by the recipient firm, Yarrow & Company, before eventually being presented to the Worshipful Company in 2002. This specific award highlights the prestige of mid-19th-century industrial exhibitions.
