Period

1890s

Antique 1890s English "Mrs. Gladstone" Ceramic Tile. Diamond-shaped decorative porcelain tile piece, originally part of a commemorative set. Catherine Gladstone (née Glynne; 1812-1900) was the wife of British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone and a notable philanthropist who founded the Newport Market Refuge. The back has "L.T ENGLAND" on it, likely indicating the maker in England who produced it.

Such tiles were common decorations in the homes during the late Victorian period and early 20th Century, and many are now considered highly collectible portraits and glimpses of the past. Size: 6 x 6 x 1/4 in.
