Tile panel, earthenware, Konya, 1381-2

Record status

Individual type · partial

Period

1381-2

Four convex tiles from the drum of a dome, made of earthenware covered with coloured glazes. As now arranged, the tiles form a section of a two-dimensional arcade design, outlined in yellow (a full arch flanked by two half-arches). The spandrels of the arches have an interlace design in white on a black ground.

The arches themselves are filled with arabesque decoration: an arrangement of four large half-palmettes formed from smaller half-palmettes rendered in white and dark-blue glazes is shown against a pattern formed from half-palmettes of the smaller size in turquoise and white, all against a dark-blue ground.
