This circular medal depicts Johann Hanold the Elder of Augsburg (1479–1540). Produced in Germany and dated 1533, the medal is attributed to the Master of the Blaurer medal. Georg Habich attributed a group of Augsburg medals to this maker, postulating him to be Hans Mair, and noted that the style recalls the work of Hans Kels the Younger.

The obverse shows a bust of Johann Hanold depicted three-quarters to the right. Surrounding the portrait is a German inscription reading '*IOHAN HANOLD SEIN ALTER WAS LIIII IAR M D XXXIII.' Crafted from cast lead, the medal measures 40.5 mm in diameter and weighs 16.6 grams.

Historical context

Johann Hanold the Elder was a staunch supporter of Lutheranism. The Swabian Reformer Ambrosius Blaurer served as preacher at St. Moritz in Augsburg, the site of Hanold's tomb. The boxwood model for this medal, preserved in the Staatliche Museen Berlin-Dahlem, carries the coat of arms of Honold vom Luchs on its reverse. The medal was purchased by the museum in 1905 from Herr Adolph Hess, Nachfolger, Frankfurt.
