This object is a square medal designed by Wendy Ramshaw, probably made in Britain around 2000–2001. Measuring 9.6 cm high, 9.6 cm wide, and 1 cm deep, it is constructed from layers of polished and matte stainless steel, acrylic (perspex), and white resin inlay. The fabrication employs techniques including laser-cutting, etching, and engraving.

The medal features a square outer frame with layered construction, presenting an openwork circular band overlaid with geometric and monogrammatic forms. The acrylic and stainless steel layers feature a delicately etched architectural profile designed to evoke the glass and steel architecture of the Crystal Palace, referencing the Great Exhibition of 1851.

Historical context

The medal was commissioned by Homes and Gardens and V&A Enterprises in 2000 for the Homes and Gardens / V&A Classic Design Awards. It was created to be presented by the Prince of Wales to mark his special choice in the Award for British Classic Contemporary Design. The artist designed the medal as a layered structure reminiscent of a computer disk to incorporate references to the Prince, the sponsors, and the origins of the Victoria and Albert Museum.
