Period

This modernist tea spoon was designed and made in 1993 by Andreas Fabian in Bremen, Germany. It belongs to a four-piece cutlery set and measures 15 cm in length. The spoon is crafted in silver using forging techniques, while the overall cutlery set utilizes silver and stainless steel.

The spoon is characterized by a round, shallow bowl attached to a slender handle shaped in the form of a straight rod. The design avoids applied ornamental decoration, focusing instead on streamlined geometric forms and polished metallic surfaces.

Historical context

Fabian developed this cutlery set to investigate the essential purpose of tableware by uniting philosophy, utility, and aesthetics. His process involved creating numerous prototypes to adjust proportions, weight, and functional handling. Fabian expanded upon this research later in his career, finishing a PhD titled 'Spoons and Spoonness' at Brunel University in 2011. The piece was included in the Shimmer Exhibition and loaned by The Penelope and Oliver Makower 1974 Charitable Trust.
