Historical context

The form of the ladle is strongly influenced by French models. A stem of similar section and profile is shown in Diderot's Encylopdie, vol. 8, pl.XI while the shell and husk motif occurs in a design on plate 58 of Pierre Germain's Elements d'Orfèvrerie of 1748.The shell motif and volute form also occurs in a centrepiece by Crespin of 1742 (ill. M. Clayton) The Collector's Dictionary of Silver and Gold of Great Britain and North America, Country Life, 1971. p.126.
