Period

ca. 1780

This automaton musical clock was made around 1780 in London by William Carpenter, who worked in London's Soho district from about 1770 to 1805 and specialised in musical clocks and automata. The clock case, mechanised figures, and bells are constructed from gilt brass, embellished with enamelled and glass paste decoration. The piece measures 88.9 cm in height, 46.99 cm in width, and 30.7 cm in depth, and it bears the signature 'WILL.M CARPENTER LONDON'.

Mounted with figures in eighteenth-century costume holding bells, the clock offers a selection of six musical tunes comprising two dances, two jigs, a song, and a march. The standing figures strike the hours and chime the quarters, while seated figures play the musical tunes on bells situated beneath their feet. Directly below the dial, the clock face is pierced to reveal a two-storey palace interior. The lower section features a classical arcade painted with a landscape background, while the upper storey depicts scenes of a masked ball in a ballroom. As the music plays, rows of costumed automaton figures process across the scene from left to right.

Historical context

Elaborate timepieces with musical mechanisms and automata were produced in late 18th-century London primarily for export to Eastern markets, including Turkey, India, and China. In these regions, such clocks were acquired by rulers and merchants as novelty toys and status symbols, with many collected by the Chinese Emperor. While this piece reflects types found in imperial palace collections across Asia, it has been suggested that it may have been commissioned for an Indian client.
