This silver caddy spoon was made in London between 1810 and 1811 by the silversmith Josiah Snatt. It measures 9.7 cm in length, 3.8 cm in width, and 3 cm in height. The piece bears London hallmarks for 1810–11, though the town mark is missing, along with the maker's mark of Josiah Snatt.

Constructed from two stamped silver components, the spoon features a broad bowl formed in the shape of a fluted shell. The handle, also stamped, terminates in a three-pronged fork configuration where it is soldered to the base of the shell bowl.

Historical context

A caddy spoon is designed to measure and take dry tea from a tea caddy, typically made small enough to fit directly inside. English caddy spoons emerged in the mid-18th century as the Chinese tea bottle was replaced by the tea caddy with an opening large enough for a dispensing spoon, making the earlier measuring bottle cover obsolete. Unlike many other small silver items, caddy spoons were excluded from the exemption under the English Act of 1790 and were consistently required to be hallmarked.
