Period

mid 17th century

This brass and iron lantern clock was produced in Paris in the mid 17th century by the maker Geuroux, whose signature appears on the piece as 'Geuroux AParis'. Executed in the Baroque style using casting, turning, and engraving techniques, the wall-mounted clock is constructed with a square bottom and copper-alloy plates.

The upper section of the clock features top plates decorated with pierced foliate strapwork containing tulip flowers and leaves. A prominent bell surmounts the structure, supported by four brackets topped by turned baluster finials that match additional finials placed on either side of the top plate. The dial is dominated by a chapter ring with large Roman numerals, accompanied by a single hour hand, a minute hand, and a central rotatable disc used for setting the alarm.

Historical context

Lantern clocks originated in Europe during the 16th century as domestic, weight-driven chamber clocks designed to hang from a hook or rest upon a high wall bracket, allowing the hourly strike of the bell to be heard throughout the household. This particular clock was bequeathed by artist Estella Canziani as one of two clocks among thirteen items that entered the collection.
