Historical context

This coin was issued by the city of Kabyle, an ancient inland settlement in Thrace situated on the river Tonsus, west of Develtus. Known also as Cabyle, Calybe, or Kalibe, the town later acquired the names Diospolis and Goloë. Struck during the Hellenistic Period between c. 250 and 183 BC, civic coinage of this type functioned as local civic currency in ancient Thrace, with examples recorded from the Jambol Region and Sliven.
