Historical context

This bronze coin was struck under Hadrian by the civic authority of Koila in Thrace during the Roman Imperial Period, dating to c. AD 117–138. Hadrian, born Publius Aelius Hadrianus in 76, served as Roman emperor from 117 until his death on 10 July 138. Known for his philhellenism and extensive travel across nearly every Roman province, his reign focused on the direct administration of provincial affairs, consolidation of defensible borders, and major building programmes.
