Historical context
Nicopolis ad Mestum was a Roman town situated in the province of Thrace on the Mesta river. Julia Domna served as Roman empress from 193 to 211 through her marriage to Emperor Septimius Severus, becoming the first empress of the Severan dynasty. Following Severus's death in 211, she held substantial prominence as empress dowager while her sons Caracalla and Geta briefly co-ruled, during which civic coinages bearing her portrait were struck.
