Historical context
Nicopolis ad Mestum, historically rendered as Nicopolis ad Nestum, was a Roman town located in the province of Thrace along the Mesta river. Caracalla, born Marcus Aurelius Antoninus into the Severan dynasty, served as Roman co-emperor alongside his father Septimius Severus from 198 and his brother Geta from 209. After Geta was murdered in 211, Caracalla governed as sole emperor until his assassination in 217, during which provincial civic mints issued bronze coinage under his authority.
