Obverse: Laureate bust of Philip the Arab, right, wearing cuirass and paludamentum. Legend: IMP M IVL PHILIPPVS AVG. Reverse: The Capitoline Trias: In the middle Zeus, enthroned, holding patera and sceptre; at feet, eagle; to left, Hera, holding patera and sceptre; to right, Athena, holding shield set on the ground and spear. Legend: COL FL PAC DEVLT. Measured specimens give a mean weight of 8.18 g (mean of 2 recorded specimens) and a diameter of 23 mm (from 1 recorded specimen).

Historical context

Deultum, also known as Develtos, was an ancient city located in Thrace near the mouth of the Sredetska reka river and Lake Mandrensko. This civic bronze piece was struck there during the Roman Imperial Period under Philip the Arab, who reigned as Roman emperor from 244 to 249. Proclaimed emperor following the death of Gordian III, Philip ruled during the third century until his defeat and death near Verona in 249.
