Historical context

Lysimachos was an officer and successor of Alexander the Great who ruled as king of Thrace from 306 BC until his death in 281 BC at the Battle of Corupedium. Under his reign, large silver tetradrachms were issued across his territories to finance state expenditures and military operations. This Hellenistic royal coin was produced between c. 297 and 281 BC at Lysimacheia, an important town established on the Thracian Chersonese.
