Historical context

Lysimachos was a former officer and bodyguard of Alexander the Great who became king of Thrace in 306 BC and king of Macedon in 288 BC. During the Hellenistic Period, this tetradrachm was produced under his authority at the mint of Ainos, an ancient city located in East Thrace. The coin adheres to the Attic weight standard, which was widely employed for large trade pieces used to meet state expenditures such as military pay.
