Historical context

Commodus ruled as Roman emperor from 177 to 192, serving first alongside his father Marcus Aurelius before governing alone from 180 until his assassination in 192. Gargara was an ancient Greek city located on the southern coast of the Troad in Anatolia, initially positioned beneath Mount Gargaron before moving to a coastal plain in the 4th century BCE. This bronze civic issue was struck at Gargara during Commodus's reign between AD 180 and 192.
