Historical context
Sestos was an ancient Greek city located on the Thracian Chersonese peninsula on the European coast of the Hellespont, near modern Eceabat in Turkey. Caracalla, born Lucius Septimius Bassianus and later called Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, ruled as Roman emperor from 198 to 217 AD, initially as co-emperor with his father Septimius Severus and subsequently as sole ruler. Under his imperial reign, the city of Sestos in Thrace struck civic bronze coinage.
