Coin in bronze struck at Plotinopolis in Thrace, dated 2nd century AD. Corpus Nummorum, the online type corpus of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, records it as CN type 12882 (period: Roman Imperial Period; issuing authority type: city).

Obverse: Head of (youthful) Dionysus, right, wearing ivy wreath. Reverse: Silenus standing left, holding cantharus and wine-skin. Legend: ΠΛΩΤ-ΕΙ-[Ν]ΟΠΟΛΕΙΤ. Historical context

Plotinopolis was an ancient city in Thrace established by the Roman emperor Trajan and named in honour of his wife, Pompeia Plotina. Struck during the second century AD, this bronze civic coin reflects the local coin production of the newly established Roman Imperial centre prior to its later replacement by Didymoteichon.
