Historical context

Marcus Aurelius Severus Alexander was Roman emperor from 222 until 235 AD, becoming at the age of 13 the youngest sole emperor of the united Roman Empire and the last ruler from the Severan dynasty. His prosperous 13-year reign ended when a military conspiracy resulted in his assassination in March 235 AD, inaugurating the Crisis of the Third Century. This bronze coin was issued by the city authority of Koila in Thrace, a region of Southeast Europe that formed a province of the Roman Empire.
