Historical context
Byzantion was an ancient Greek city colonised by Greeks from Megara in the 7th century BC. Located in Thrace, the city continued as a Greek-speaking centre through classical antiquity and into the Roman era. Trajan ruled as Roman emperor from 98 to 117, during which time civic authorities such as Byzantion struck local provincial bronzes bearing his image and titles.
