Historical context

Pautalia, situated in ancient Thrace, was a major settlement that possessed a city assembly, magistrates, courts, and its own civic coinage. During the Roman Empire, it minted coins depicting its public buildings, basilicas, baths, and various Greek deities, notably housing a prominent temple dedicated to Asclepius. Marcus Aurelius ruled as Roman emperor from 161 to 180, initially ascending the throne alongside Lucius Verus before enduring severe military conflicts such as the Parthian and Marcomannic Wars.
