Historical context

Pautalia was an ancient city of Thrace, originally settled by the Dentheletae. Following the accession of Marcus Aurelius in 161, the Roman Empire was ruled jointly with his adoptive brother Lucius Verus until Verus died in 169. During this imperial regnum, Pautalia maintained its own municipal institutions, magistrates, and civic coinage, producing civic issues under Marcus Aurelius that portrayed civic deities and imperial figures such as Lucius Verus.
