Historical context

During the Roman Imperial Period, the Thracian city of Pautalia, also known as Ulpia Pautalia, operated its own civic coinage. Struck between AD 161 and 176 under Emperor Marcus Aurelius, this issue depicts his wife Faustina the Younger, daughter of Antoninus Pius, who served as Roman empress from 161 until her death in 175 or 176 AD.
