Historical context

Nicopolis ad Mestum, situated on the left bank of the Mesta river in the Roman province of Thrace, used the form "ad Mestum" on its municipal coinage. The town struck civic bronze coins during the imperial era. Commodus, who served as co-emperor from 177 before ruling alone from 180 to 192 following the death of Marcus Aurelius, oversaw a reign that marked the end of the Pax Romana.
