Historical context

Hadrianopolis was an ancient settlement in Thrace, originally known as Orestias, located by the Evros river before being refounded as Adrianople by Emperor Hadrian. This civic bronze unit was struck there during the Roman Imperial Period in AD 191–192 under Commodus. Commodus had ruled as Roman emperor from 177 to 192, initially alongside his father Marcus Aurelius and subsequently as sole ruler from 180 until his assassination in 192.
