Historical context

Byzantion was an ancient Greek city founded by Megarian colonists in the 7th century BC. Under the Roman Empire, it formed part of the province of Thrace and continued to strike civic bronze coinage. Gordian III served as Roman emperor between AD 238 and 244, having assumed sole imperial rule over the Roman world at the age of thirteen following his acclamation.
