Historical context
This bronze coin was struck at Odessos in Thrace between AD 238 and 244 under the authority of the city. During this period, the Roman emperor was Gordian III (Marcus Antonius Gordianus), who governed from 238 to 244 after becoming the second-youngest sole emperor of the united Roman Empire at the age of 13. The host mint, Odessos, had originated from a Thracian seaside settlement to become a major Black Sea seaport.
