Historical context
Septimius Severus reigned as Roman emperor from 193 to 211, securing supreme power following the death of Pertinax in 193 during the Year of the Five Emperors. After overcoming rival generals and campaigning in the east against the Parthian Empire, he consolidated his authority across the provinces. This bronze civic issue was struck between AD 196 and 198 at Augusta Traiana in Thrace, an ancient city known as Beroe or Ulpia Augusta Traiana that flourished under Roman rule.
