Historical context
Augusta Traiana, previously known as Beroe, was an important Roman city located in the Upper Thracian Plain. This bronze coin was struck for the city under Septimius Severus, who served as Roman emperor from 193 to 211 after emerging victorious from the Year of the Five Emperors. Severus consolidated imperial authority through extensive military campaigns across the provinces, defeating rival claimants and reigning until his death in 211.
