Historical context

Septimius Severus ruled as Roman emperor from 193 to 211, emerging victorious from the Year of the Five Emperors following the death of Pertinax. He consolidated power across the empire, campaigning in Gaul, Africa, and against the Parthian Empire. Augusta Traiana, located in Thrace and previously known as Beroe or Ulpia Augusta Traiana, operated as an urban mint during the Roman Imperial Period, issuing city coinage bearing the emperor's portrait.
