Historical context

Caracalla was Roman emperor from 198 to 217 AD, having been proclaimed co-emperor alongside his father, Septimius Severus, before eventually ruling alone following the death of his brother Geta in 211. He was a member of the Severan dynasty whose reign included the granting of citizenship to free inhabitants of the empire through the Antonine Constitution. This coin was produced under the civic authority of Augusta Traiana in Thrace, an ancient urban centre previously named Beroe or Ulpia Augusta Traiana.
