Historical context

Caracalla, born Lucius Septimius Bassianus and later taking the name Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, was a Roman emperor of the Severan dynasty who ruled between 198 and 217 AD, initially as co-emperor alongside his father Septimius Severus. After the murder of his brother Geta in 211, he ruled as sole emperor until his assassination in 217. This civic bronze coin was struck between AD 197 and 217 at Hadrianopolis in Thrace, also historically known as Adrianople or Orestias.
