Historical context

Marcus Aurelius ruled the Roman Empire from 161 to 180, initially governing alongside his adoptive brother Lucius Aurelius Verus following the death of Antoninus Pius. A member of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty and a Stoic philosopher, his reign marked the conclusion of the Pax Romana and was heavily dominated by military campaigns, including the Parthian War and the Marcomannic Wars. This civic bronze issue was struck under his imperial authority at Pautalia in Thrace.
