Historical context

Cardia, or Kardia, was the chief town of the Thracian Chersonese, situated at the head of the Gulf of Melas. Originally a colony of the Milesians and Clazomenians, the settlement later received Athenian colonists during the tyranny of Miltiades between 515 and 493 BC, though the city was not consistently pro-Athenian. Kardia struck bronze coinage in Thrace during the Hellenistic period between c. 357/346 and 309 BC.
