Historical context

This bronze coin was struck between 235 and 238 at Anchialos, an ancient city in Thrace situated on the Black Sea coast. Anchialos operated as a civic issuing authority within the Roman Imperial Period under Emperor Maximinus Thrax. Maximinus Thrax, a soldier of Thracian origin, was acclaimed emperor by the army in 235 following the murder of Severus Alexander, ruling until his death in 238.
