Historical context
Augusta Traiana, historically known as Beroe or Ulpia Augusta Traiana, was an ancient city located in the Roman province of Thrace in the Upper Thracian Plain. During Roman rule, it became the most important regional city above Philippopolis, experiencing significant construction alongside developments in art and music under Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Annia Galeria Faustina the Younger served as Roman empress from 161 until her death in 175 or 176 as the wife of Marcus Aurelius, holding the titles Augusta and Mater Castrorum.
